Peter Hitchens wrote this article in the UK Daily Mail a few days ago. Here’s the main point:

Why is this frenzy taking place?

Here is a clue. On July 12, Deborah Cohen, the medical correspondent of BBC2’s Newsnight, revealed an astonishing thing. The World Health Organisation (WHO) had reversed its advice on face masks, from ‘don’t wear them’ to ‘do wear them’.

But the key fact was that it had not done so because of scientific information – the evidence had not backed the wearing of face coverings – but because of political lobbying.

She revealed on Twitter that: ‘We had been told by various sources [that the] WHO committee reviewing the evidence had not backed masks but they recommended them due to political lobbying.’ She said the BBC had then put this to the WHO, which did not deny it.

The WHO and CDC were very clear that masks had little, if any, evidence in support of their use. That hasn’t changed.

This whole thing reminds me of nothing so much as the APA’s decision to remove same-sex attraction from its list of disorders several decades ago. Psychology is far less precise (and much more philosophical) than the physical science of masks, but something similar happened. Their stance changed in response to political pressure in the form of riots and protests.

Its a bit like a child throwing a temper tantrum and his parents responding by giving in to his demands, except in the case of masks, the giving in is considered the moral high road, and anyone who argues against it – like those who argued against insane lockdowns before – want to “kill grandma”.

What we are seeing with masks is a terrified populace begging for anything to help them. They think masks help, and to pacify their fear, “experts” have relented and now demand mandates for masks.
